Interview with Jasiek Mela

Jasiek Mela had a serious accident at the age of 13 when he received an electric shock of 15,000 volts. As a result of this accident he lost his left shin and right forearm and currently uses a prosthetic leg.

He is the youngest and only disabled person to reach both the North and South Poles. Jasiek is also the chairman of the “Beyond the Horizons” Foundation, which helps disabled people, in particular those affected by accidents. This year he organised for the third time the Poland Business Run– a charity business relay race, which starts at the same time in 6 participating cities across Poland and unites 15,000 people!

Thanks to all his achievements and experiences, Jasiek has undoubtedly become an extremely inspiring trainer and speaker.

  1. When I hear the word “inspiration” I think …people. All the people who I met while traveling, those who live in much harder conditions and don’t give up. They teach me how to appreciate life. I am who I am thanks to others.
  2. What was your motivation during your expedition both to the North and the South Pole? As described by one of my doctors, these expeditions were the best way of rehabilitation. I needed it to show, especially to myself, that everything is possible. I also knew how many other people are waiting for examples that everyone, including the disabled, can do great things.
  3. What is the main message you want to convey to people during your trainings? We don’t realise our possibilities, our powers.  Instead of complaining, it’s better to work.  Every puddle, even the smallest one, reflects the sky. It’s our choice what we want to see.
